what does the BG_CANVAS exactly do? how does background_canvas_max_layer actually affect the result? any demo?

The Environment Canvas mode is used to make effects such as glow work on 2D. If this mode is not used, then effects will only affect 3D rendering. See the 2D HDR demo for an example.
