What is the best way to organize skins for a character (similar to Spine Skins and attachement)

I initially had the character pieces as Node2d with Sprites for each skin underneath but it's not possible to control bare Node2d for rotation anchor not animation as it is with Sprites.

Sprites without textures as control nodes themselves would not work correctly because it looks like since it does not know the size without a texture.

I know it's always possible to preload all the textures and swap them through script, I was just wondering if there is a more visual way to do this.
